In our school holidays we had a project. For our project we had to make our own “small world”. My small world is based on global warming. We also had to include an explanation of our project. Here is my explanation…..

What is it?

Global warming is the increase in Earth’s average surface and ocean temperature and its’ predicted continuation.

Cause

Global warming is caused by carbon emission gasses which are produced by things such as cars, trucks, planes, coal mines, and even by little things such as just simply turning on a light bulb. All of these things increase the thickness of the Earth’s atmosphere, and because the Earth’s atmosphere is thicker the greenhouse gasses that we humans produce can’t escape and they get trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere. And because of this the Earth heats up.

Consequences

The consequences of not stopping global warming would be catastrophical according to scientists. If the crisis isn’t stopped then sea levels will rise flooding, flooding major cities. There would be changes in rainfall patterns. Ice in the Antarctic’s would melt which would cause practically a mass flooding of the whole world. Animals such as the Polar Bear would go extinct and there would be depletion of the Ozone Layer.

Solution

Countries all around the world are trying to stop the crisis. Some countries want to turn to nuclear power because it is renewable, but others are arguing that it will just make the situation worse. There are also things you can do at home like turning off unnecessary lights and turning off electrical appliances at their power-point. Another great way to help the cause is by using your car less and walking more regularly, you can also use more public transport.

Setting Explanation

On the left of my project is how the Earth looks like today (and a few stars for effect). On the right is how the Earth will look like if global warming isn’t stopped (again a few stars for effect this time black although the stars will not be affected by global warming.)

Why I Chose This Subject

I chose this subject because it is such a big crisis and it affects everyone and everything. I also wanted to alert people about the dangers that we face in the future.
