Abu Dhabi Visits Down Under!!!

In the final week of term 2 Belmore South had some more visitors!

This time they were from a country called the U.A.E (United Arab Emirates), which is in the
Middle East. The reason for the visit was to see how we use technology to help us learn and engage us with the world. They were extremely surprised but excited to see how education has changed and how technology really plays a big role in our learning.

Along with all this I had the privilege of taking the visitors around the school! It was a great learning experience.

Let’s hope Belmore South can get some more visitors in the future!

Yes! The crowd cheered! Against all the odds we had won our second successive debate of the year. Once again it was a close contest but our Belmore South courage and determination pulled us through and victory was ours!

So far we are 2/2 and flying high. Here was the team for the debate…

1st speaker: Celia

2nd speaker: Naomi

3rd speaker: Ramiz (me)

Team Adviser: Natalie

 Chairperson: Justin

Timekeeper: Timothy

The topic was that “Junk Food Should Be Banned From School Canteens”. We were the affirmative so we were saying that it should be banned. Our opposition were Strathfield South and they looked to have it won until their 3rd speaker stuttered and made a few mistakes; it was that close! Let’s hope we can strive again and go one step further than last year.

P.S Have you noticed that all the debaters are from the Allstars?

The Debating Reign Runs On!

Everyone was anxiously waiting; who would win? Who would take out the first debate of the year? “Belmore South!”Yes!!! We had won our first debate of the year!

Debating is back and the topic is “Earth Hour is a Waste of Time”. We were the negative, so in other words we were saying that Earth Hour is not a waste of time.

The debate was held at Campsie P.S and it was a tight battle. Here was our team…

1st Speaker: Natalie

2nd Speaker: Naomi

3rd Speaker: Ramiz (Me)

Team Adviser: Celia

Our next debate is: “Junk Food Should Not Be Sold in School Canteens”.

Hopefully we can continue our winning streak for many debates to come! Well Done!

Krakatoa – When/Why/How (Bad) Was/Did the Eruption?

This term the AllStars have been researching natural disasters.

We firstly chose which area of natural disasters we were going to work on e.g. volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. Then we got stuck into it… for the past two weeks we have been researching our question (we had to come up with a question, as you can see my title is my question) and have found out some interesting facts. It is now your turn to answer the questions! 1.      What is so special about the noise Krakatoa made?

2.      How many kilometres away was the eruption heard?

3.      How high did the cloud and ash go when it erupted?

4.      How many people died altogether from the eruption and the after-effects?

5.      How high were the tsunamis that lashed the coast    after the eruption?

Well good luck. Make sure you post your answers.

Crazy Cricket Match!

Yesterday the B.S.P.S cricket team scrapped through by the skin of their teeth to win their second round match (against Hampden Park P.S) to proceed to the 3rd stage of the knockout competition.

Nevertheless, we were lucky to win. It was all downhill for us from the start. Firstly, we lost the toss and were sent in to bat. In the first 13 overs we had only scored 13 runs and at that stage defeat was staring us in the face.

But that B.S.P.S spirit and will to win the game kicked in and we surged back to score 30 runs in 12 overs to make our final score 43.

After a 30min break it was finally time for us to defend our total; and boy did we defend it. Our first wicket came in the second over and from then on we took control of the game (well almost).

Our opposition made approx. 30 runs in their first session and the game was in the balance. The next 12 overs would make or break the match and fortunately we prevailed. We took wicket after wicket and won the match in the second last over by 2 runs.

Our next match will be against

Garnia
Bay. Hopefully we can strive again and march on to the forth round.

Farewell 07

Another year has gone passed and how oh so quickly it has flew by. This year has been a year of great achievements; becoming vice captain, becoming a peer mediator and having a blog.

Having a blog has been a whole new experience. The best thing about having a blog is being able to interact with people around the world and being able to see how the work that they do differs from ours. I would also like to thank everybody who has visited or commented on my blog.

Another highlight of 2007 has been being part of the debating. Although we didn’t retain our title I still had a lot of fun debating and it has been a great learning experience.

But I think that the biggest highlight of 2007 has been being elected as vice captain and becoming a peer mediator. I’m very excited and proud of myself and can’t wait to start my duties.

There is no doubt that 2007 has been a spectacular year and I certainly cannot wait until next year!

What Makes Me Interested: The Universe

The Universe is everything that exists. It contains everything including us, our planet, the sun and anything you see when you look up at the night sky. The Universe is a place of great oddities. Some people say that it was the creation God, while others say that it simply just came into existence and some people think that it was never created, it was just here. Either way, we will never be certain of how it came into creation (or if it even did).

The Universe is a perplexing place and has baffled people long before Galileo first pointed his telescope towards the sky. The Universe has had a relatively dramatic effect on the world. Many scientists have been threatened to be tortured, while others paid the full price with their life. This cruel punishment usually came after making statements that were either against their religious beliefs or were just plain stupid. A perfect example of this is the famous astronomer, Galileo Galilei. He was told to deny his theory of how objects move under the threat of torture and possible execution. There have been numerous cases just like this one and some have turned ugly.

The Universe has had a great affect on me and has intrigued me a great deal. I started studying the Universe when I was I year 1. It has now become a hobby and a leisure time activity. I want to continue studying this subject and hope to be involved in it in some way when I am a bit older.

Most people think that the universe is a boring place but in actual fact it is amazing. If you are one of those people who have nothing to do when they’ve done their homework or when there’s nothing to watch on T.V; then get out a book on the universe or surf the net. Who knows you might even discover a comet!

Cricket Gala Day

Belmore South was at it again, but this time we stumbled at the final hurdle. On the 15th 8 girls and 8 boys went and played in the Milo Super 8’s Cup. There were approximately 4 other schools there and they were all ready to play. The first game was a breeze for us, we set the benchmark after a whopping 107 runs off 7 over’s (42 balls).

The second game was a bit tougher, we got their opening batsman out and I think that proved to be the breakthrough. We won the game 72 runs to 67.

Game number 3 was a tough game as well. We were on the ropes early but we clawed ourselves back into the game. Victory was in sight but we couldn’t find the remaining runs that we needed. We lost the game by 5 runs.

Luckily, we had already done enough to make the final. We were all proud that we made it this far so it didn’t really matter if we had lost. But we still put in our best effort.

We fell short by 5 runs but it didn’t matter, we put in our best effort and that was all that mattered on the day.

Crazy Camp

Yes, it was that time of the year again! It was time for the annual stage 3 camp!

And what a camp it was! There was everything, canoeing, archery, rock-climbing and even a Waterslide!

The best activity we did was definitely when we went canoeing. Everyone chose a partner, and I chose Timothy. At the start we went canoeing in groups, but then, the real test came. We went in pairs. Although Timothy and I capsized, it was great fun!

The funniest thing that happened at camp was: Timothy was going back into his cabin to get ready for the following activity, when something went horribly wrong! A pair of underwear fell on top of Timothy’s head! We eventually found out that it was Clement’s underwear.

On the second night we had a quiz, and everyone got into groups of either 5 or 6. Then, every group had to choose a team name; our team name was the Schwarzenegger’s. There was a wide variety of names, including: “The Bau Chika Wau Wau’s, “The Master’s of Disasters”, “The Slayers” etc. On the same night we were also going to watch a movie, called “Happy Feet”. But, before we watched it the teachers announced the winners of the quiz… “The Schwarzenegger’s!” Yes, we had won it!

Later that day we had some hamburgers for lunch, and a chocolate ice-cream. After we finished eating we had some group photos and we got our prize for the quiz.

Then we said goodbye to the instructors and set off, back to school.

MissionMaker Story #1

The Museum owner has just phoned me saying that there has been a burglary and that 3 of my inventions have been stolen. I then rush to the scene to find no trace of the burglar, not even fingerprints. I feel angry and I just want to scream out but I restrain myself. I then hear a faint screeching sound and see the silhouette of someone, could this be the burglar? It came closer and closer it looked like It had a gun, I was sweating, I was nervous. “Oh, glad to see you Thomas!” said the museum owner. “Oh, am I glad to hear your voice Patrick”, I said in relief. “I thought you were the burglar, Patrick.” “I thought you were the burglar!” Patrick  said. We both gave a sigh of relief. “Well Thomas, off you go, this might be the most important thing that you will have done in your life. Good luck and good-bye”, he said. “Thank you, and good-bye”, I replied.

And then I set out on a quest to find my artefacts….
